My Outside Interests

I have been married to the same wonderful woman since 1981. We have two adult children - a daughter who graduated from the School of Education at UCSB and is now a high school English teacher; and a son who is in his senior year of college at UCLA studying Astrophysics. My free time is best spent with my wife and family, or in outdoor activities, especially long-distance running, cycling, and backpacking. My best marathon time is 3 hours 18 minutes. Also, I am deeply religious and enjoy studying Christian history and the Bible.

My Healthcare Practice

The first time I wanted to become a physician was as a small child, maybe around age 5, when I became inspired to be a doctor after watching the TV drama "Ben Casey". Later I was fascinated by science, and eventually majored in biochemistry while at UCLA. Medicine offered me the opportunity to apply science to the everyday struggle of our existence by using science to improve our health. I finally chose family practice because the specialty encompasses a wide variety of other subspecialties, while allowing me to interact with multiple generations within the same family. What I really like about Kaiser Permanente is that it is an integrated health care system. This makes an enormous difference to me because prior to coming to Kaiser Permanente in 2003, I practiced in a disintegrated healthcare environment.

In a word, my practice philosophy can be defined as "relationship". I take the doctor-patient relationship very seriously. I view the relationship as a partnership with both parties having their own respective responsibilities. I am responsible for delivering appropriate medical care. The patient is responsible for taking care of his or her health. I do not believe in healthcare "rights" without personal responsibility for one's own health. In this way, I look forward to developing a good and productive relationship with my patients.

Although I am a primary care provider, I am sometimes not available because I rotate through the hospital in Vallejo, taking care of hospitalized patients. Therefore, if I am not in clinic, one of my colleagues is available to help with your needs.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
