Welcome to my home page

I'm Dana, a nurse practitioner with Kaiser Permanente's Fresno Dermatology Department.in the Dermatology Department. Thanks for visiting my website.

First, about my name. My parents named me after Dana Andrews, a male film actor who was popular in the 1940's. I've always wondered why they didn't pick someone else like John Wayne or Gary Cooper, but that's the story.

Background

I've been involved in health care and public health services since 1971, when I joined the U.S. Air Force and was trained as a medical corpsman/administrative specialist. I left the Air Force in 1975, moved from my home state of Ohio to Fresno, and received my first degree from Fresno State in 1979. I then worked as an environmentalist with the Ventura County Environmental Health Department from 1979 to 1991, with the bulk of my experience in hazardous materials control. In 1991 I decided to make a career change and returned to Fresno State, ultimately earning a master's degree and qualifying as a family nurse practitioner. I did a lot of my clinical training at this facility. My primary teacher was Dr. Shaikh Matin, to whom I remain indebted. While in graduate school I worked as a registered nurse in acute/hospital care, home health, case management, and public health. My first five years of practice as a nurse practitioner were with Tulare County's Health Services Department, providing care to rural and underserved patients. I've been working with Kaiser Permanente since April of 2002.

I am married, have two grown daughters, and one granddaughter. We have two dogs, two cats, and - last time I checked- two fish.

My leisure activities reflect my belief in the role of an active lifestyle in maintaining health and happiness. I enjoy hiking, jogging, biking, skating, surfing, camping, weight training, skiing, and a bunch of other "ings." I practice Tai Chi, and sometimes help teach at the Tai Chi Center of Fresno. My wife and I enjoy traveling in general, and taking cruises in particular.

Practice Philosophy

As I mentioned above, I am a firm believer in the impact of lifestyle on health. Kaiser Permanente is also dedicated to this approach. You may have heard of our "Thrive" program. This is an extensive schedule of health promotion programs and routine screenings for members of all ages. We also realize that anyone can become ill or develop problems from time to time. When that happens, my role is to work with you to get you better as soon as possible. Finally, and maybe most important, I am here to act as your advocate. Kaiser Permanente is a great organization, but it's a big place.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
