About Me

I chose primary care internal medicine because I enjoy taking care of all sorts of patient problems. I also value getting to know the whole patient and helping them stay healthy. This includes everything from preventive health measures (such as exercising and not smoking) to diagnosing and treating complex medical problems. I try very hard to maintain my patients’ health and their trust.

My first contact with Kaiser Permanente came during my internal medicine residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento while doing several rotations there. Kaiser Permanente’s whole approach to health care made sense to me and I enjoyed the sense of community while working there. I started as a full-time staff physician there in 1989. I enjoyed the next eight years very much, but I eventually moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997 because my fiancée (now wife) needed to be close to the University of California in Berkeley. I have been working at the Kaiser Permanente Antioch facility ever since.

I am an Associate Chief of Medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Antioch, which includes attending meetings, scheduling, and the like. However, it also allows me more input into the various policies and day to day workings of the clinic, which I enjoy. I work 80% of the time, which means I am off two afternoons a week.

I am also an Associate Director of Hospice for the Diablo Service Area. I have always believed strongly in the philosophy of hospice and feel privileged to be able to work in this program. The philosophy of hospice is to help people nearing the end of their life to maintain their dignity while receiving help with symptom control, pain relief, and emotional support. The program is designed for patients who have decided to focus more on maintaining the quality and comfort of their life, rather than on pursuing a cure of their condition. It provides care seven days a week using visiting nurses, therapists, pharmacists, and counselors to help both the patient and their caregivers, usually in the patient's home. If you know someone who would like more information about our program, please feel free to contact me or call Diablo Service Area Hospice directly at (925) 229-7800.

When not at work, I especially enjoy playing racquetball, biking, travel, and photography. I have been to every continent except Antarctica. I have a daughter (Grace, born in 2000) who is wonderful and great to come home to!

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
