About Me
Why Did I Choose Pediatrics?
As a kid growing up in Wisconsin, I was the 'boy' baby-sitter for our neighborhood. For as long as I can remember, I've gravitated to babies and children of all ages. While in college, my high school biology teacher suggested I might pursue a career in medicine. Linking kids and medicine together led me to my choice of pediatrics. It remains a perfect 'fit' for me. I can't imagine doing anything else.
After completing my pediatric residency training in San Diego, we moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. My wife-to-be, also a pediatrician, received her masters in public health at University of California, Berkeley. A friend of ours steered me to St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco where I spent eleven very exciting and rewarding years providing health care to the Indo-Asian 'boat-people' from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, plus local families from the 'Haight-Ashbury' community.
Why Did I Choose Kaiser Permanente?
By 1988 I'd had enough of commuting across the Bay Bridge, and the Southeast Asian migrant community had essentially disappeared, so I began my Kaiser Permanente career at the Fairfield facility. Choosing Kaiser Permanente followed from my work with the sliding scale/Medi-Cal patient population at St. Mary's Hospital. I wanted a pre-paid 'socialized model' of health care without the conflict that seemed inherent in the 'fee for service' model of health care. The Kaiser Permanente goal is to keep everyone healthy, but sometimes 'bad' things happen to 'good' people and sick patients need access to an integrated, no road-block system of care that can provide the best care in the most efficient and comprehensive way to make things right again.
I've been extremely happy and fortunate to work with such a wonderful group of pediatricians and staff at Antioch and the whole Diablo Service Area. Our 'work family' strives each day to do what's best for each and every patient and member and their families. Since 1992, I've functioned as the department chief at the Antioch, Delta Fair Medical Offices with our goal being to keep making our department better for our patients and our staff.
What I Do Outside of Work
When at home, I spend many therapeutic hours tending my rose garden and keeping the bird feeders full so the squirrels have something to eat. I love to go 'catching' but spend many enjoyable hours fishing. If the fish aren't biting I divide my time between 'birding' and reading. Also enjoy hiking and watching sporting events, and dining out in the Bay Area is certainly one of my passions. We now have two grown sons who are very good at keeping in touch by phone, and love to come home or have us visit so we can take them out to eat.
