My Qualifications

I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 2003. Before my employment with Kaiser Permanente, I worked at the Sacramento County Primary Care Clinic for two years providing primary care services to indigent and medically under-insured residents of Sacramento County.

My Credentials

Medical school UC Davis School of Medicine, Davis, CA
Internship UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Residency UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Board certification Family Medicine, American Board of Family Medicine

My Healthcare Practice and Philosophy

I think 80% of illness is due to poor lifestyle choices. Smoking and obesity are probably the 2 most correctable problems. I try to stress quiting smoking (if needed) to all patients who smoke, at every visit. In addition, I think maintaining a healthy weight and exercising are both vitally important as well. In this day and age of "super sizing", TV, and increased driving, we now have a nation-wide epidemic of obesity. Although it is easier said than done, a balanced diet and exercise can go a long way in disease prevention and, in some cases, treatment.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

The Kaiser Permanente system is ideal for preventive care, patient education, and access to specialists. The first point is pretty self explanatory. It is much easier to prevent ailments then to treat them.

We have numerous seminars, workshops, and classes for patient education. I think they are important tools to empower patients to care for themselves. A patient who arrives with the idea of "fix me" will not improve as well as a patient who is proactive and takes the time for educational enrichment.

The Kaiser system of complete integration is very efficient . I can refer patients to see specialists or call for a consultation quickly.

With the introduction of Health Connect (electronic medical record), I have instant access to your medical record.

What does all this mean? Kaiser is a great place to work and helping to keep you healthy is my number one goal. Well, playing basketball is my number one goal, but you are a close second.

My Outside Interests

Hmmm. Where should I begin. I was born and raised in Sacramento. I decided to travel the world and moved an impressive 15 miles away to Davis for college and medical school and then moved right back to Sacramento to complete my residency.

My wife and I have 4 children (Tristan, Amber-my little princess, Zachary and Joseph-twins). I enjoy riding my bicycle to work (when it's not raining), playing basketball 4-5 days per week, and playing with my children. I am the reigning "Freeze tag" world champion.

I abalone dive on the coast a couple times per year. I work on my vegetable garden during the Summer. One of these days I plan to start skiing. Although at 6'8", it won't be easy.

Even though Sacramento is the greatest city on Earth, I do plan to travel around a bit and see the rest of the world some day.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
