About Me

I am originally from New York, but my formative years were spent in Southern California. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from UCLA in 1992, and my Master of Public Health in Health Education and Biostatistics from Tulane School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine in 1994. Prior to medical school, I worked in the highlands of Guatemala for the Carroll Behrhorst Foundation, as well as for the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta in the Public Health Practice Program Office.

Becoming a physician allows me to work individually with women, teaching them about their own bodies, and helping them to make choices in their health. It gives me the opportunity to continually learn about women, their bodies, illness and treatments. I like working with my hands, and enjoy the challenges in surgery and procedures. Working as an Obstetrician & Gynecologist provides me with a simulating and continually changing work environment. I enjoy the variety the field, working in the clinic, hospital, and labor and delivery. The field has a focus on prevention and annual health care maintenance which is a part of medicine that blends well with my training in public health.

While growning up I learned a valuable lesson from my parents who had their own family business. They were never able to leave their work at work. Being a part of Kaiser Permanente allows me to spend my time taking care of patients. Having a system to manage the practice medicine permits me to do what I have learned to do best. I also have career interests in public health, and believe that my future in Kaiser will bring me new challenges in that arena.

Philosophy of Healing

Go to the people,
Live with them,
Learn from them,
Start with what they know,
Build on what they have,
And in the end they'll say,
We did it ourselves.

.....Old Chinese Proverb

Interests

I enjoy spending time outdoors - mountain biking, cycling, hiking, rock climbing, and swimming. I am learning to kayak, and have practiced in a swimming pool and the ocean. I am excited and nervous to get onto the rivers.

I love all kinds of music, especially from other countries. Brazilian music is my current favorite. I enjoy going out to hear live music, so I was spoiled in New Orleans by all the great music there.

Family & Friends

My family lives in Los Angeles, San Diego, and New York City. I travel as often as I can to spend time with my parents, my two sisters, and my four nephews. I love playing with my dog, Dixie, and spending evenings at my local dog park. She is a great Frisbee dog and a sweetheart. She comes to clinic to visit me sometimes, and Dr. Putnam has designated her to be the official clinic dog for our department. My fiance is a retired from his career as a mountain bike tour guide in Moab, Utah. We enjoy mountain biking, cycling, and kayaking.

I am typically in the office three days a week. Some days I may be in Labor and Delivery or in the Operating Room.
