Should I see my doctor when I get back?

If you were healthy during your trip and feel well when you return home, you probably don't need to see your doctor. However, sometimes it takes weeks or even months for some illnesses to appear. For example, 90% of travelers who get malaria do not feel sick until after they return home.

If you become ill while traveling or after returning home, and you have any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see your doctor:

  • a fever or flu-like illness
  • persistent diarrhea
  • a skin rash or sores
  • jaundice (when the whites of the eyes or skin appears yellow)
  • unexplained weight loss
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue
