In areas where tap water is sketchy or where hygiene and sanitation are poor, avoid untreated tap water, drinks made with water (such as lemonade) and ice cubes in drinks. Note: Alcohol does not make a drink safe, especially in mixed or open drinks. Fruits, juices, and ice are all common ingredients in cocktails, and they can all be contaminated.
The following liquids should be safe:
- Water that is boiled is safe. If you can’t boil it, treat water with a purification kit. Follow package instructions.
- Hot drinks, such as tea and coffee, made with boiled water.
- Canned or bottled carbonated water and soft drinks. Non-carbonated bottled water may be safe, but refilling such bottles with unsafe tap water is a common practice, so check the seal.
- Beer and wine served from the original bottle.
