Eyelid malpositions includes a variety of conditions such as:
- inward turning of eyelids (entropion)
- outward turning of eyelids(ectropion)
- misdirected eyelashes irritating the eye(trichiasis)
- eyelid laxity (floppy eyelid syndrome)
These conditions can result from age, inflammation, scarring, trauma, congenital malformation, or disease. Eyelid malposition can cause chronic eye irritation, poor eyelid closure and drying out of the eye, excessive tearing, infection, corneal damage, and impaired vision. These conditions can be addressed surgically to reposition and tighten the eyelid as needed in order to protect the eye. Sometimes these problems develop after previous cosmetic or reconstructive eyelid or facial surgery and can be improved. For more information on these conditions visit www.asoprs.org
