Skin Resurfacing

1. Laser skin rejuvenation, or resurfacing, is an outpatient procedure that smooths wrinkles and reduces brown spots on the face caused by aging, sun damage, or other defects. The laser technology used is a CO2 or Erbium laser. This is an aggressive skin treatment that requires several weeks to months of healing, but the end results can be dramatic. A full facial treatment is usually performed under sedation and takes about 1 - 2 hours and is performed by a physician.

The patient is initially evaluated upon consultation with the surgeon to discuss the various treatment options and to decide if laser skin resurfacing is the appropriate treatment. Photographs are taken. Patients are often placed on a skin care regimen to prepare the skin for the laser procedure. (See section called Preparation for Surgery for details). Postoperatively, the face is initially treated with an emollient and cool compresses. It is important to drink plenty of liquids, and keep the skin moisturized and cleansed as instructed. Pain medication is prescribed as needed. The skin is very pink and sensitive for the first few weeks until the new epithelium begins to grow. While the tightening and smoothing of skin is seen after the first few weeks, the face may remain pink for several months after the surgery.

2. Chemical facial peels provide another option and lead to improvement of skin tone, texture, pores, and fine lines. The chemical peel is performed by a physician in an office setting. Patients are placed on a skin care regimen prior to the facial peel to prepare the skin for an optimal result. The Obagi blue peel is a commonly used technique that applies Tricyclic Acid (TCA) to the skin surface. The patient is evaluated beforehand to determine the depth and strength of the peel. Obagi peel can be applied to the face, neck and hands. The skin will peel up to a week after the treatment, revealing a new, fresh, smooth complexion underneath.
