GENERAL INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS

HOW DO I SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT?

  • If your physician or medical assistant has scheduled your appointment, please see “How do I prepare myself for the exam”

  • If your physician did not schedule your appointment, please call the Radiology Appointment Center the next business day at (510) 675-2778 to schedule your appointment

HOW DO I PREPARE MYSELF FOR THE EXAM?

For all examinations, please wear loose clothing. Please do not wear any jewelry.

1. For Ultrasound:

  • Obstetrical and Pelvis Ultrasound: Your bladder should be full. Drink four 8oz. glasses of water, one-hour before the appointment--do not urinate after you start drinking.

  • Abdomen Ultrasound: Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before your appointment.

2. For CAT scan:

  • Abdomen: Your examination may require drinking contrast and/or intravenous injection. Please call the radiology appointment center for more specific preparation.

  • Head / Chest: Your examination may require intravenous contrast. Do not eat or drink for 4 hours before your appointment.

3. For MRI:

  • If you have a pacemaker, metallic devices in your body or a history of metal in the eye, please be sure your physician is aware before scheduling this exam as it may be dangerous.

  • Do not wear makeup or hair pins.

4. For Barium enema:

  • Pick up the over the counter preparation kit at the pharmacy.

5. For IVP and UGI:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before the examination.

HOW LONG WILL THE EXAMINATION TAKE?

  • An examination will take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour.

WHO INTERPRETS THE EXAMINATION AND HOW DO I GET THE RESULTS?

  • A Radiologist, who is a physician experienced in radiology, interprets your examination and send a report to your physician.
