In order to continue your care at home, please follow the instructions below:
1. General Anesthesia or Sedation
- Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours
- Do not drink alcohol, take tranquiizers or sleeping medications, or any non-prescribed medicine for 24 hours.
- Do not make important decisions or sign any important papers in the next 24 hours.
- You should have someone with you tonight.
2. Activity
Rest at home for the remainder of the day. Resume normal activities when comfortable.
3. Diet
Liquids or light nourishment as tolerated today, then progress to a regular diet.
4. Discharge Medications
Take as prescribed.
5. Operative Site
There is always the possibility of infection in the uterus following this procedure. If you are soaking more than one regular-size pad per hour, call your doctor/clinic. Avoid douching, using tampons, or having intercourse for two weeks, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
6. Bathing
Your doctor will inform you of the dates you may begin showering and tub baths.
7. Special Instructions
- It is normal to experience some vaginal bleeding following this procedure. If you are soaking more than one regualr-size pad per hour, call your doctor/clinic.
- You may also experience some lower abdominal cramping, which is caused by the normal muscular activity of the uterus as it returns to normal size. A heating pad applied to the abdomen should provide relief.
- If you had an abortion, your period should begin in 4-6 weeks. The flow may be heavier or lighter than usual. If you do not have a period for 6 weeks following the abortion, please call the GYN Advice Nurse.
- If you had D & C, your menstrual period may begin in 4-6 weeks. If you are menopausal, you may not have a period. If you are not menopausal and have not had a period for 4-6 weeks, please call the CYN Advice Nurse.
- If you have been given birth control or other hormone pills, start them as directed by your doctor.
8. Problems or Questions
Notify your doctor/clinic for:
- Temperature of 101 degrees F or greater
- Saturation of more than one regular-size pad per hour
- Cramping worse than menstrual cramps
If problems arise at night or on weekend, call Eve. & Weekends Advice (510-307-1588) and ask for the Advice Nurse. If necessary, you will be referred to the Emergency Department or to the on-call surgeon.
