Hysterectormy Discharge Instructions

Do not drive for 2 weeks after surgery or if taking narcotic-containing pain medication, such as codeine or hydrocodone (Vicodin).

Your surgeon will order pain medication to use at home. For the first 3 to 4 days, take your prescription pain medication as needed. Instead, you may take non-prescription medication for mild pain.

  • Resume taking any other medications as usual, unless instructed to stop taking them.
  • You may shower, but do not take a tub bath for one week.
  • Refrain from heavy lifting for 5 weeks after surgery.
  • Refrain from sexual intercourse for 6 weeks after surgery.
  • You may have some vaginal bleeding.
  • You may remove Steri-strips/paper tape 1 week after your surgery.
  • Unless instructed otherwise by your physician, you may resume a regular diet.
