Total knee class

Patients who have recently had a total knee replacement will be sent to Physical Therapy for rehabilitating and strengthening their knee. The first appointment will be an initial consultation with a physical therapist, who will examine the knee, help improve range of motion and review or instruct them in a home exercise program. They will also explain the total knee class, which you will be participating in thereafter.

The total knee class is located in the physical therapy department. The classes are EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY from 10:00-12:30. At each visit, you must register at the front desk and then proceed to the gym. The class will consist of exercises to improve your range of motion and strength, as well as assist you with your gait and functional activity. We have 2 therapists, a Physical therapy assistant, and many volunteers to assist you throughout the class. Please expect to be in the class for about an hour and a half.

On average, patients will continue attending the class for 2-3 months after their initial evaluation. We recommend that after patients complete the class, they invest in either an outside gym membership or home equipment (i.e. stationary bike), in order to continue strengthening and rehabilitating their knee.

For any other questions or concerns regarding the total knee class, please contact the physical therapy department at 248-3200.
