NUCLEAR MEDICINE
Bone Scan
A bone scan is a very helpful diagnostic tool which is used to evaluate bone growth, fractures, tumors, arthritis, and infection of the bone.
After you have registered, you will be injected with a radioactive isotope that is absorbed by your bones. After the injection you will be asked to drink four to six 8 oz. glasses of liquid. You will be required to return to the Nuclear Medicine Department in 3-4 hours for the actual scanning, where you will be asked to lie on your back for the procedure. The total scan time is approximately 1 hour.
The istotope will be eliminated through your body waste and will not be noticeable.
You may request to use the restroom prior to the examination or during the bone scan interval.
Please feel free to ask questions at any time during your visit to Nuclear Medicine. Your physician will receive a report within 5 working days.
Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated in reporting on time for your appointment. If you cannot keep this appointment, please call (510)675-2778 (APPT) to cancel or reschedule.
