UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL INSTRUCTIONS (G.I. SERIES)
An Upper Gastrointestinal Series (G.I. Series) is an examination of the esophagus, stomach, and the duodenum (first part of the small intestine). You will be asked to wear a hospital gown and to lie on an X-ray table. In order for your gastrointestinal tract to be seen on X-ray, you will be required to drink an effervescent mixture (similar to Alka-Seltzer) and barium. The radiologist will ask you to turn from side to side and to hold your breath periodically throughout the examination. At times, some pressure might be applied to your abdomen and the examination table might be tilted. This examination usually takes 30 minutes to complete, but could take longer. You will be released after your X-rays have been reviewed by the radiologist. If a Small Bowel Series was ordered in conjunction with a G.I. series, you will be required to remain in the department for 1 to 3 hours.
Your physician will receive a report in 5 to 7 working days or, if necessary, a phoned report on the same day.
Please follow the instructions below carefully.
INSTRUCTIONS:
• Eat or drink nothing after midnight the evening before the examination.
• Take nothing by mouth the morning of the examination: no water, juice, coffee, etc.
• Do not smoke or chew gum before or during any part of the examination.
PLEASE DRINK PLENTY OF LIQUIDS FOR 24 HOURS FOLLOWING THE EXAMINATION TO HELP ELIMINATE THE BARIUM.
REPORTING ON TIME FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. IF YOU CANNOT KEEP THIS APPOINTMENT, PLEASE CALL (510)675-2778 (APPT) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
