Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Regional Center (510-670-7270)

  • Offers a 20-mile system of trails for exploring and hiking

Don Castro Regional Recreation Area (510-538-1148)

  • Location: 22400 Woodroe Ave., Hayward
  • A 2-mile trail circles the lake, showcasing native plants and animals, and is adjacent to 5 miles of Regional trails.
  • Has a swimming lagoon with a large shallow area roped off especially for children; attended by lifeguards-OPEN FROM EASTER – SEPTEMBER

  • Swim classes are offered year-round, and range from parent/baby to adult
  • Additional activities include water fitness, Junior Aquatic Water Safety, and much more
  • Swim lessons: 6 classes per session, & minimum payment of $33.00 per session
  • Lap swimming hours and fees: Monday-Friday, 6am-8:30am, 11:30am-1pm, 5pm-7pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 8am-1030am; $4 entrance fee

Dan Oden Swim Complex (Aquatics Hotline: 510-675-5485)

  • Location: 33901 Syracuse Ave., Union City (At Logan High School)
  • Offers a variety of classes during the spring, summer and fall, such as tiny tots swim lessons and water exercise classes
  • Has a swim team- Union City Leopard Sharks Swim Team- for youth 6 years and older; practice starts in April, and the team will compete at local meets around the Bay Area through September

  • Jr. Jazzercise is one ongoing class offered for ages 5-12 years, Sundays, 9am-10am (Call Barbara Rodriguez at 794-8340). This class teaches children things like coordination, strength and endurance, nutrition and the importance of physical fitness.

  • A 10-acre park where children 8 and under can enjoy rides based on nursery rhymes

Rotary Nature Center & Wildlife Bird Sanctuary (510-238-3739)

  • A center that has an aviary, small animals, and other interesting information about wildlife. This center is geared for children ages 6-12 yrs
  • Also on Lake Merritt- a lovely place to walk/run/bike- especially with the lights on the lake in the evening
