Stroke

Stroke

A stroke is when blood flow to a part of the brain is impaired, either because the arteries have become restricted due to atherosclerosis (or hardening of the arteries), or because there is bleeding in part of the brain. Within minutes, the nerve cells in that area of the brain become damaged and die. As a result, the part of the body controlled by the damaged section of the brain cannot function properly.

Stroke is an emergency, just like a heart attack. Many people are slow to seek medical care after strokes. This is unfortunate as prompt treatment may in some cases reverse the effects of the stroke. Patients experiencing Symptoms of Stroke should call 911 and seek care immediately at the closest emergency room.
