After Your Bronchoscopy - Instructions

* ACTIVITY – You should go directly home to rest for the remainder of the day. Your physical activities should be limited as directed by the physician.

* DIET – Nothing should be swallowed until two (2) hours after the procedure. Then start taking sips of WATER–SWALLOW VERY CAREFULLY. (Remember your throat has been anesthetized.) If you have no problem with swallowing, clear fluids such as water, apple juice, clear tea, clear broth and jello may be taken. If after another hour, you do not experience any problems with the above list, you may eat.

* You may have chills and fever the first 24 hours AFTER the procedure.

  • For Fever – You may take acetaminophen (brand name, Tylenol) 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed until the elevated temperature returns to 98.6º.

  • For Chills – Hot fluids, keep warm with warm clothing and blankets. Take acetaminophen 2 tablets every 4 hours (as noted above).

  • If condition continues after 24 hours you should contact the pulmonary clinic (510) 752-1219.

  • For Severe Shortness of Breath - Go to ER immediately.

* You may notice a small amount of blood with your sputum for 24 hours after the procedure. Significant blood in the sputum is unusual. If you begin have continued bleeding or an increase amount of bleeding, notify your physician immediately.

* You may have soreness in your throat. You may use throat lozenges that are available over the counter in any pharmacy.

* If problems arise at night or on weekends, call the Advice nurse at (510) 752-1190. If necessary, you will be referred to the Emergency Room or the On-Call physician.
