Specific requirements must be met before bronchoscopy may be performed. If all requirements are NOT met, the procedure will be cancelled for your safety.
BEFORE YOUR BRONCHOSCOPY:
- There should be NOTHING SWALLOWED after MIDNIGHT. THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT! A patient who eats or drinks anything on the morning of bronchoscopy may vomit during the procedure. Vomited food or liquid may enter the lungs and cause severe injury or DEATH. Medication that is ordered to be taken on the morning of the procedure should be swallowed with only a sip of water.
- Please leave ALL valuables at home (i.e., money, jewelry, credit cards, etc.). Bring cardiac medicine with you.
- No work, important decisions, or recreational activities should be planned for the day of the procedure.

- After you are discharged, you must have an adult accompany you home. You may not drive after the procedure. You may take a taxi if no other transportation is available to take you home.
