Post Bronchoscopy Discharge Instructions

1. Rest at home for the remainder of the day. Do not drive nor operate any machinery, small appliances, or a stove for the rest of the day. Do not sign any important papers or make important decisions for 24 hours. Your judgment will not be clear. You may resume your normal activities tomorrow.

2. Do not drink alcohol or take any sedatives and narcotics for 24 hours unless prescribed by your doctor.

3. Mild throat discomfort and coughing small amounts of blood are common immediately following bronchoscopy, especially if a biopsy was performed. The discomforts should subside in 24 to 48 hours.

4. Call your physician for a temperature higher then 100°F persisting longer than 24 hours after the bronchoscopy. You may take Tylenol for control of fever and "achiness".

5. Call your doctor if you have sudden onset and increasing shortness of breath, new chest pain, and increasing amounts of bleeding from postoperative coughing.

6. You'll usually receive a follow-up appointment with the physician who performed your bronchoscopy at the time of discharge from the recovery room.
