EMG (Electromyogram) or NCS ( Nerve Conduction Study):
These tests are performed at the request of the referring physician to electrically diagnose a nerve or muscular disorder. Comprehensive history, physical exam and discussion are not carried out, since this is a "test" appointment. Both tests involve some discomfort, and often access to the upper arms, legs and back are necessary so please wear loose-fitting clothing and PLEASE DO NOT WEAR LOTION OF ANY TYPE.
EEG (Electroencephalogram):
This is a test of electrical brain activity, usually ordered to search for evidence of seizures. The test is painless. The head is measured and electrodes are placed on the scalp with a paste. The test usually takes about 60 minutes with the patient lying down, during which time you may be asked to hyperventilate or be shown a flashing light. Sometimes your physician requests the EEG recording while asleep: in this case you may be asked to deprive yourself of sleep.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging):
This scan is performed in the radiology department in most Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers. The scan takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and sometimes as long as 60 minutes. This is not a "full body scan." We will determine which area is to be scanned (usually the head, cervical or lumbar spine, but sometimes other areas). During the scan you will hear humming and thumping noises. If you think you may be claustrophobic, let your provider know so an anti-anxiety medication can be prescribed. Also let the MRI technician know about your concerns so additional reassurance and explanation can be provided. The most important thing is for you to lie quietly and still during the exam. You will not be allowed to wear anything metallic during the exam because of the powerful magnet in the scanner. If you have a heart pacemaker, metal implants or any history of brain surgery or metal fragments in your body or eye, please let your doctor or the MRI technician know before the scan. Some cosmetics contain metals, so avoid wearing makeup to your exam. Please allow several days before your doctor for the results of the scan
