Headache Evaluation

Headache disorders are generally taken care of by your primary care physician. Headaches are actually one of the most common problems evaluated and treated by primary care physicians. The evaluation typically involves a history and physical examination along with symptoms of the headache. Most of the time that is going to be all the testing that is necessary. Occasionally there is concern for other diagnoses. Imaging studies such as CT scan or lumbar punctures may be performed as well as occasionally other laboratory tests. CT scan or MRI scans are not routinely needed for most patients with a headache. Per the American Academy of Neurology Guideline: “In adult patients with recurrent headaches that have been defined as migraine the routine use of neuroimaging is not warranted”. Another question that often comes up is whether the patient needs to see a specialist. Again primary care physicians actually have the most experience in patients with headache, and it is one of the most common problems they will treat. When issues and concerns arise about patients headaches, they sometimes will contact a clinical pharmacist, neurologist or behavioral specialist for further advice. On occasion patients will end up seeing another specialist when appropriate.
