In ischemic strokes (strokes due to blood clots in vessels interfering with blood supply to the brain), an area of the brain is deprived of blood flow and thus of oxygen. Nerve cells are very sensitive to this and begin to suffer irreversible damage within 4-6 minutes. Permanent damage to the affected area of the brain occurs if blood flow is not restored quickly (generally within 1-3 hours). This results in difficulty using the part of the body that is controlled by the part of the brain which was damaged by the stroke.
If you are having Symptoms of Stroke call 911 immediately and seek emergency medical care at the closest hospital.
