In general, we view the teen years as a very special change in life. We see becoming responsible for one's health care as an important part of the teen years. Also, we believe it is important for teens to establish relationships with responsible adults in addition to their own parents.
Consequently, at Kaiser South Sacramento Pediatrics, when teenagers are seen for physical exams and health assessments, their Doctor or Nurse Practitioner will want to see the teen alone. The parent may speak with the Doctor or Nurse Practitioner before or after the visit.
If the parent has specific information needed to evaluate the patient, clinic staff should be notified so the parent can speak with the examiner before the exam. In addition, if a teenager requests that a parent be present during the exam, that request will be honored immediately.
During the visit, what a teenager tells his or her Doctor or Nurse Practitioner is confidential unless the teen's behavior indicates that there is a danger to the teen or a danger to others. If drug or alcohol use/abuse or mental problems appear significant enough to meet these criteria, the parent will be informed and proper referrals made.
Patients 12 years and older may make their own appointments for evaluation of sexually transmitted diseaeses (STD), possible pregnancy or birth control. Confidentiality will be kept. By state law, parents and guardians are not allowed to participate or receive information regarding these matters unless authorized by the patient.
