Lactation Services
- The Lactation Services that we provide at Kaiser, Hayward reflect our Baby Friendly philosophy to encourage, support, and protect breastfeeding. Our Lactation Team are all Registered Nurses who are board certified Lactation Consultants.
- In the hospital, Lactation Consultants work with breastfeeding mothers and babies who are having breastfeeding concerns. They talk with every mother during their postpartum stay. They assess breastfeeding with a short interview, and offer assistance if there are any problems. They answer questions and give anticipatory advice so mothers know where to call for concerns after discharge.
- Approximately two days after discharge, babies are seen in the Pediatric Clinic by a Registered Nurse who is also a board certified Lactation Consultant. Breastfeeding problems are also addressed at that appointment. There is at least one phone call contact to breastfeeding mothers within a week after the baby’s discharge to evaluate ongoing support and encouragement of breastfeeding mothers.
- We also have a Lactation advice “warmline” 510 784 2804, which is available 24 hours a day, every day. Calls are returned between 9.00 am till 5.00pm.
- Breastpump Rental and sales station 510 784 4545. Open Monday to Friday by appointment only.
- In addition, our Lactation Consultants are available to see any hospitalized breastfeeding mother or baby, and to consult with providers regarding breastfeeding problems and safety of medications while breastfeeding. We have an ongoing Lactation Education Program for our staff and for the physicians/Nurse Practitioners (Providers).
