After discussing your Pap test results, your provider may suggest procedures to diagnose and treat the problem. If your cells are inflammed because of a vaginal infection, you may be given medicine. To learn more about the abnormal cells, your provider may view the cervix through a magnifying instrument (colposcope) and remove some tissue. Depending on how severe the problem is, you may need no further treatment. Most procedures take no more than 15-30 minutes. You should feel little discomfort. But you may have some cramping or light spotting for several days afterwards. Ibuprofen (motrin) should help relieve any pain.
Since the colposcopy examination is a special consultation, it is not meant to replace or substitute for your regular gyn checkup or visits. Continue your regular appointments as directed and contact your regular gynecologist for gynecologic advice. Please register 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.
