Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have one to two years of additional training to prepare them as specialists in maintaining the good health of patients. Many have master's degrees in nursing and all are certified by the State of California.
Nurse practitioners have their own pactice and work collaboratively with physicians, providing comprehensive health care to Kaiser Permanente Health Plan members.
Depending on their area of expertise, nurse practitioners perform
- gynecological examinations and Pap smears
- pregnancy and postpartum checkups
- infertility examinations
- general health assessments and physical examinations
- designated urgent-care appointments for minor acute illnesses and injuries
- provide teaching and counseling, such as disease explanation and prevention, prenatal instructions, contraception and preabortion counseling, nutritional, exercise and menopause teaching.
Nurse practitioners work closely with the physicians in their departments, consulting with the physicians about problem cases, and reffering anything that is outside their realm of practice. Any individual with a serious health problem or chronic disease is seen by a physician.
