How your cataract surgery is performed

In phacoemulsification, the method used most frequently, a small incision is made in the eye. A small instrument is then inserted into the eye and using ultrasonic energy, the cataract is broken up into little pieces and removed from the eye. An intraocular lens is then placed in the eye. In general, no sutures are placed in the eye when the lens is removed in this fashion.

Here is a close-up of the intraocular lens. The curled ends hold the lens in place.
