I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1983. I am the Chief of Infectious Diseases for the Hayward-Fremont hospital and past chair of Kaiser's Regional HIV Committee. For more than 25 years, I have been involved in the care of HIV-infected individuals, beginning with my training in Infectious Disease at San Francisco General in the late 70s, several years before the first reports of HIV disease.

In the early years of the epidemic, when asked why I got involved in caring for patients for whom we had so little to offer, I replied that it was the “right thing to do.” In recent years, we’ve seen near miraculous advances in our ability to transform HIV from a mostly fatal disease to a chronic, manageable condition. We at Kaiser Permanente have among the best record in caring for HIV. I am particularly proud of having championed the multi-disciplinary model of HIV care in the region. I am fortunate to work with a dedicated team, relying greatly on the assistance of my HIV coordinator, clinical pharmacist, social worker, nutritionist and medical assistant.

I have published and presented a number of studies on HIV and AIDS and continue to do research on new therapeutic agents and complications of the disease. I am a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America and the International AIDS Society. I am also certified in HIV medicine. I was the recipient of the Morris F. Collen Research Award in 2004 for my work on the association between HIV disease and heart disease.
