1. Mild discomfort from the surgery should be relieved by Tylenol.
2. A small amount of drainage, possibly even blood-tinged drainage, is common during the first few days after the tubes are placed. If the drainage continues for more than 3 days, call your doctor.
3. Water should be kept out of the ears while the tubes are in place. If water enters the ear canal and enters the middle ear through the tube, an infection can occur. While bathing, place cotton balls covered with vaseline in the ears. Swimming is discouraged, but ear plugs must be worn when your child is in the pool.
4. The ear may drain mucus or pus at any time after surgery. This may be due to getting water in the ear, allergies or a cold. If this happens, call your doctor. You will likely be instructed to start ear drops.
5. The tubes usually stay in place for about 2 years, then fall out on their own. Sometimes they fall out sooner. Rarely, they must be removed surgically.
