Welcome to our Department Home Page!

Welcome to the Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Ophthalmology Department Home Page. Our primary goal is to provide outstanding service in the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases.

For those of you who are not familiar with Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology is a medical specialty that focuses on diseases of the eye. The most common diseases we treat include conjunctivitis, iritis, cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

There are seven physicians in the department of Ophthalmology at the downtown San Rafael Kaiser Permanente Medical Center at Third and A Steet. These are Dr. David Claiborne, Dr. Alice Cheng-Bennett, Dr. Peter Gorenberg, Dr. Richard Alvarado, Dr. Jyotsom Ganatra and our oculoplastic specialist and department chief Dr. Gregg Gayre. To find out more about us, please visit our individual websites.

We are lucky to have a very talented group of support staff including our manager Laura Sullivan RN, our head nurse Jackie Babcock RN, and the charge nurse of our special procedure rooms Dolores Cuerva RN. We also have an excellent group of nurses and vision service assistants who work with us.

We do most of our ophthalmic surgery in our procedure rooms that are located in the clinic at our Downtown San Rafael facility. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated staff for our surgical procedures.

In addition to our ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment services at our downtown San Rafael facility we also offer Optometric services which encompasses fitting of glasses and contact lenses. Our optometrists at the downtown facility include Dr. Stephen Godfrey, our chief of Optometry, as well as Dr. David Nakagawa, Dr. Vince Delgadillo, Dr. Jane Lee-Koida, Dr. Joan Mah, Dr. Janine Chin, Dr. Charles Dahlman, Dr. Michel Nadel and Dr. Paul Yee. A large optical shop supervised by Mr. Clyde Curl is located on the first floor of our building and they offer a wide variety of frames as well as contact lens services.

We are very proud of our Department. We will do our best to serve you and welcome your feedback.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
