Welcome to Nuclear Medicine!

The Department of Nuclear Medicine in Kaiser Oakland is a leading provider of nuclear medicine services in the Northern California region. We serve the Kaiser Permanente members in the East Bay as well as patients referred to us from other Kaiser Permanente facilities throughout the Bay Area. Together, with the Kaiser Permanente organization, our mission is to provide high-quality health care services and improve the health of our members and the communities we serve. This mission includes communicating efficiently with referring health practitioners and our Kaiser members. Our staff physicians are board-eligible or board-certified in Nuclear Medicine.

What is Nuclear Medicine?

Nuclear Medicine often plays an integral part of patient care. Our specialists use safe and simple techniques to image the body to diagnose and treat disease by using small amounts of radioactive material. The amount of radiation received in a typical nuclear medicine imaging procedure is comparable to that from regular X-ray tests. Nuclear Medicine imaging is unique because it provides information about both structure and function. Our procedures often identify problems before they are detected by other types of tests. For patients receiving treatment, the radioactive material concentrates in the organ being treated

A Special Message for Patients Scheduled to have a Nuclear Medicine Test:

Because nuclear medicine tests may be unfamiliar to you, we urge you to click on the Instructions for the Patient link located on the left side of this page. It will give you general information about our nuclear medicine tests and more importantly, instructions to prepare for your nuclear medicine test. IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THE PATIENT PREPARTATION INTRUCTIONS, YOU WILL NEED TO BE RESCHEDULED.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
