Welcome to the Oakland Genetics Department!

The Oakland Genetics Department is one of five sub-Regional Genetics departments that comprise the Northern California Regional Genetics Program. There are additional KP Genetics departments in San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and Fresno.

The Oakland Genetics Department provides comprehensive medical genetic services to KP Health Plan members residing in the East Bay. We specialize in counseling, diagnosis and management of genetically-influenced conditions. Our clinical services include prenatal counseling and diagnosis, neonatal genetics consultation services, pediatric and adult genetic counseling and evaluation, hereditary cancer risk evaluation, and genetic screening.

Our Multispecialty Clinics provide coordinated and ongoing care for northern California Health Plan members for the following common genetic conditions: craniofacial problems such as cleft lip and palate, spina bifida, metabolic disorders including pediatric lipid/cholesterol disorders, skeletal disorders such as dwarfing conditions, neurofibromatosis, and neurological problems with a genetic cause.

Our department also houses a number of Region-wide programs such as Prenatal Screening, Newborn Screening, Hemoglobinopathy Screening, Infectious Disease Screening and Breast Cancer Screening and Tracking.

In conjunction with the Regional Genetics Laboratories in San Jose, our department provides cytogenetic and molecular DNA laboratory services. We have an ongoing residency training program for pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology, and we provide genetics education to both Health Plan members and KP health care providers.

We look forward to serving you and your family in our clinic.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
