Welcome to the home page of the Adult Division in the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center. We hope you will find useful information here about our division, the services we offer, as well as some useful links to Mental Health Information and Web Sites as well as General Health Topics.

Our department offers many best-practice, evidence-based treatments to help you feel better if you are troubled by psychological symptoms. These treatments range from educational and therapy groups, to brief individual therapy, to medication management under the supervision of a psychiatrist. We also offer a full range of treatment for substance abuse problems in our Chemical Dependency Division. We work with children and adolescents in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. We have a program available for our members in Gilroy at the Kaiser Permanente Gilroy Medical Offices. We also have a speciality program for the assessment of Autism Specturm Disorders.

There are many things which have been scientifically proven to promote improved mental health that do not include medications or therapy. These approaches involved taking better care of yourself by getting enough good quality sleep, exercising in a way that is appropriate for your physical condition (you may want to consult your primary care physician before starting an exercise program), eating well and in a way that controls your weight, quitting smoking if you smoke, and avoiding excessive alcohol, caffeine, or harmful drugs. Links to information on these topics from the Kaiser Permanente Healthwise Handbook and other sources are available below. You can print these pages for future reference, or to share with friends, colleagues, and loved ones.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
