Medical genetics is a branch of medicine specializing in the diagnosis of genetic conditions and birth defects. Medical geneticists and genetic counselors work together with other health professionals to provide the best possible care to families with these conditions.

Medical geneticists are doctors trained to recognize genetic disorders and birth defects, to understand the significance of these with respect to the well-being of the patient, to arrange for proper treatment, and perhaps most important, to help the patient and/or the patient's family understand and cope with the disorder.

Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors identify families at risk for birth defects or genetic disease, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, and analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family. Genetic counselors also provide supportive counseling to families, serve as patient advocates and refer individuals and families to community or state support services.

The San Jose Genetics Department is a Center of Excellence. Centers of Excellence (COE) are Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers designated as a center of knowledge, expertise, technological equipment and advancements for various medical specialties. By centralizing resources at designated centers, we can excel at specialization. Each COE is dedicated to advancing the latest techniques and available procedures to our members.
