Welcome to Neurology!
Welcome to the Neurology Clinic!
You have been scheduled to see a neurologist, neurology nurse practitioner, neurology registered nurse or EEG technician. Neurology is a medical specialty for the evaluation and care of problems with the brain, nerves and muscles. Examples of neurologic conditions are stroke, seizures, migraine and Parkinson’s disease.
During your visit you will be asked questions about your general health, the current problem you are having that led to a referral to this clinic, as well as questions about your personal life that can help your provider get as complete a picture of your condition as possible. You may be examined by the neurology specialist and may be asked to do such things as hold out your hands, walk on your toes, stick out your tongue, or follow a light with your eyes. Such seemingly trivial tasks are all part of a neurological exam and provide the clinician with valuable information about your condition. Special tests we do include EEG and EMG. These will be explained to you if you need them. We do not do x-rays or scans in this department. Neurologists are not surgeons and do not do operations.
While we do the best to keep on schedule, there may be visits where you are not seen on time. These situations may occur if the provider you are seeing that day is the “on-call” or “hospital doctor” and is delayed in the emergency room with an urgent case. Your visit will not be shortened or rushed – it just may take longer to finish than usual. Other factors can also interfere with your provider’s ability to stay on schedule. It may be that a patient unexpectedly requires a procedure to be performed in the office or that the case is more complex than expected and requires a longer visit. The provider will spend as much time with you as necessary to ensure that the history and neurologic exam you require are complete.
When you register for your appointment, we will make every effort to inform you of any known delays. Often the delay is not known because it occurs during the appointment ahead of you. We will try and watch out for these delays as they occur and let you know if there is a problem as soon as we know. If you are on a tight schedule, have children to pick up from school, on your lunch hour, etc., please let us know when you register so that we can let your provider know. If it is past your appointment time, please feel free to ask the receptionist about the delay.
After this visit you may be followed in the Neurology Clinic for your particular condition or you may be referred back to your primary care provider with recommendations from neurology as to care or further services needed. If you have any questions regarding your neurologic condition after you leave the clinic, you may call the Hayward clinic at 784-4607 or the Fremont clinic at 248-3572 to speak with a medical assistant. The Neurology Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9 am –5 pm.
