Welcome to the Neurology Department

Welcome to the North Valley Service Area Neurology Department Website. We look forward to meeting you and hope this site helps you learn about us. Our department strives to provide high quality neurologic services to our patients in the Roseville and Sacramento areas. Neurology is a medical specialty that focuses on diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles. The most common diseases we treat include stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, memory disorders, headache, neuropathy (damage or disease of the nerves), brain and spinal cord trauma and Parkinson’s disease. Some useful Internet links that provide more information about all of these diseases are listed on the left.

Appointments

We are a Referral-only department. Many neurological problems can be treated by your primary care physician or nurse practitioner (NP). Your primary care physician or NP can refer you to a neurologist when necessary. If you are experiencing neurological type problems, please call an advice nurse or contact your personal physician or nurse practitioner through the Appointment and Advice Call Center at 916-973-5243. If you do not have a personal care provider, contact Member Services at (800) 278-3329 or click here.

(Note: Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for parking, registration, blood pressure check and rooming.)

NEW: This appointment is for first visits for new referrals. During this appointment a neurologist will take a careful history and perform a neurologic physical exam. At the end of the appointment your neurologist will discuss the findings, diagnosis and recommendations for further tests or treatment with you, as well as any follow-up visits that are recommended. Usually our attention will be directed toward neurologic conditions; we will advise seeking help from your primary care provider for other medical concerns or prescription refills.

RETURN: This is a shorter follow-up appointment for patients who have already seen the same neurologist for the same problem, and is usually reserved for movement disorders, seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis or neuromuscular disorder (some exceptions are made). You may contact Neurology at (916) 973-5175 to arrange a return appointment for one of these conditions.

EMG (Electromyogram) or NCS ( Nerve Conduction Study): These tests are performed at the request of the referring physician to electrically diagnose a nerve or muscular disorder. Comprehensive history, physical exam and discussion are not carried out, since this is a ''test'' appointment. Both tests involve some discomfort, and often access to the upper arms, legs and back are necessary so please wear loose-fitting clothing and PLEASE DO NOT WEAR LOTION OF ANY TYPE.

EEG (Electroencephalogram): This is a test of electrical brain activity, usually ordered to search for evidence of seizures. The test is painless. The head is measured and electrodes are placed on the scalp with a paste. The test usually takes about 60 minutes with the patient lying down, during which time you may be asked to hyperventilate or be shown a flashing light. Sometimes your physician desires EEG recording while asleep: in this case you may be asked to deprive yourself of sleep.

Prescriptions

For medication refills, please call the Zero Refill Recorder at least 7 days prior to needing the medication. You may order prescription refills online: Click on the "Rx refill" link on the left side of this webpage. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
