Our daughter was born in 2006, at 32 weeks and weighed 2.5lbs, she was know as
“Baby Bandi” at NICU. Now she is 2yr and 8m, very active and she goes to toddler school, has lots of friends and loves to watch Dora .
When she was born and she had to stay at NICU, we were nervous and scared, we didn’t know what to expect and what to do.. we had so many questions. But one thing we knew right away, she was getting the best of care at NICU and we had all the confidence in the NICU staff. As the doctors and nurses advise the parents to spend time with their little ones, we stayed with our daughter as much as we possibly could stay and always did the kangaroo hugs in the NICU when possible.. and when we got her home we did continue with it..as time went by our daughter grew up to be a normal child .
To all the parents with babies in NICU, you can do one thing.. shower your love and affection on your baby as much as you can, hug them and spend lots of time with them, they will grow into beautiful and healthy babies.

Matthew Beaver was born at 24 weeks gestation and had a difficult course. His birth weight was 1 pound 11oz (750gms). He was not born at Kaiser. As Matthew grew/stabilized his mother Jennifer went back to college is now an RN at our Kaiser Santa Clara NICU! Jennifer is very supportive of parents with premature or sick infants. She would definitely recommend services through the Blind Babies Foundation www.blindbabies.org that helped her family through the first few years as well as the San Andreas Regional Center www.sarc.org/ and Parents Helping Parents www.php.com
Matthew is a wonderful, happy five year old. Matthew stills has a few deficits, mild cerebral palsy, blindness in one eye, chronic constipation and mild chronic lung disease requiring oxygen at high elevations. But his parents are very proud of all he has achieved. He is extremely intelligent, and his cognitive abilities advanced of most five our years old. He is very much at a four and a half year to five year level in most things. He talks well. He articulates sentences well, he loves to laugh, make other people laugh and be the center of attention. He is the most lovable child in the world.
