Scarlett McCune CI/CT BA

Facility: Fremont, Hayward, and Union City
Language:American Sign Language
Title: Interpreting Services Manager for Fremont, Hayward, and Union City and the Northern California LMP Bilingual Program Assessor
About Me:

I was born at Walnut Creek Kaiser and have lived in various parts of the Bay Area and California my entire life. My parents are deaf so American Sign Language was my first language. The deaf community I grew up in (thanks to my parents) are a very tightknit active community. We would go skiing, camping, watch movies and have parties. I am the youngest of four.

I graduated from California State University at Northridge with a BA in Deaf Studies in 1985. I have a Certificate of Interpretation (CI) and a Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc,. I maintain my certification by attending workshops and conventions throughout the year. I get a minimum of 80 hours of training every four years. I have interpreted in a wide variety of settings including Corporations, Hospitals, Medical Clinics, Educational settings, and Theatres. Medical Interpreting quickly became my favorite. I have been interpreting professionaly for twenty-seven years. My sister says that I really began interpreting when I was four years old.

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1995 as the first American Sign Language Staff Interpreter under a innovations project headed up by Ingrid Driscoll. Ingrid wrote the grant for my position after noticing the larege deaf population at the Fremont Campus. The California School for the Deaf is located 2 blocks from Fremont Kaiser. I then had the pleasure of settting up the Interpreting Services Department for Kaiser Permanente. I am currently the Manager of Interpreting Services for Fremont, Hayward and Union City which includes American Sign Language, Spanish and Chinese Interpreters. In addition to that, I am the LMP Bilingual Program Assessor for Northern California for American Sign Language.

I have been a member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)for twenty-two years. I am also a member of Children of Deaf Adults (CODA), Northern Califoria Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NORCRID), and California Healthcare Interpreter Association (CHIA). I feel its important to support the organizations that support interpreters.

When I am not working I love spending time playing with my 4 year old son. I also love going to the mountains, skiing, taking pictures, and watching movies.
