Welcome To My Home Page.

I have established this Home Page as a way to let our members know about the functional neurosurgery program as well as providing some personal information about myself. I have included additional informational links for you as well. Please click on those of interest to you.

I have been working in the Kaiser system since April 2004. I came to The Kaiser Permanente Medical Group to reach a broader patient population without the restrictions inherent to a practice dealing with multiple insurance companies and payers.

Prior to coming to Kaiser I was on the neurosurgery faculty at Stanford University where I was the Director of Functional Neurosurgery. My primary responsibility there was the surgical treatment of pain, movement disorders (I.e. Parkinson’s disease and dystonia), and epilepsy. The practice taught me the value of individualized care as opposed to “cook book” medicine. Each patient’s medical problems need to be treated in a broader context of their wishes and the goals for a quality of life that they are seeking. I believe that this philosophy overlaid with a strong scientific and medical knowledge base provide optimal care for the variety of medical issues that compromise neurosurgery.

Initially, I picked Neurosurgey as an offshoot of my desire to integrate my scientific endeavors with a practical application. I have evolved from the practice of general neurosurgery. Now I have become a functional neurosurgeon for the personal satisfaction of helping people with special neurological needs.

I believe that we need to treat our patients as if they were our own family members and loved ones. There is no VIP treatment, as all patients should receive VIP care. My goal, to the best of my ability is to delivery the state of the art neurosurgical care.

Publications

My clinical interests include the surgical treatment of movement disorders, chronic pain, and epilepsy. My research focuses on microelectrode recordings to guide ablative treatment for movement disorders. I currently use source density analysis to study epileptiform activity and cognitive evoked potentials, and cognitive neurophysiology of the cingulate cortex. I am the director of Neurointraoperative Monitoring here at Kaiser as well as my duties as a Functional Neurosurgeon.

I enjoy traveling especially to remote parts of the world. Two of my hobbies are photography and gourmet cooking and the travel enhance the opportunities to enjoy both of these hobbies.
