My Biography
Originally from Kentucky, I completed the first part of my training on the east coast, attending Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. After spending 25 years in the southeast, I was thrilled to drive across the country and begin my new life as a resident in internal medicine at UCSF. After completing my residency, I was looking for a job that included a diverse mix of patients, a smart and well-rounded group of colleagues, and the opportunity to teach residents. I was thrilled to find all of these elements become part of my daily practice as a hospitalist at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco. At Kaiser Permanente San Francisco, I have the opportunity to care for patients with a wide variety of medical and surgical illnesses. I am proud to be part of the team that cares for northern California Kaiser Permanente patients who need cardiac procedures or cardiac surgery.
As a hospitalist, I evaluate patients in the emergency room, arrange for hospital admissions, and coordinate care for hospitalized patients. I assess my patients frequently, arrange for needed tests or procedures, and consult with specialists. I believe that the less dramatic aspects of patient care can be the most important: making sure my patient’s eye drops are ordered correctly, filling out that form for her spouse or child, or taking five extra minutes to discuss with my patient what would help him quit smoking.
In addition to my patient care responsibilities, I participate in the Stroke Performance Improvement team as the Stroke Champion. Our goal is to provide exceptional acute stroke management for our patients, including rapid administration of TPA (clot-busters) when appropriate. Our stroke unit, 7 Center, provides close monitoring with frequent neurological checks, attentive and compassionate nursing care, and early physical and occupational therapy for rehab. Helping to lead our stoke program has been a rewarding part of my responsibilities as a hospitalist at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco.
My colleagues in the department of hospital medicine are amazing. I learn from each of them every time we discuss challenging clinical problems or team up to work out a “kink” in our hospital’s processes.
Outside of work I enjoy adventuring in San Francisco with my husband, son and daughter. We can usually be found digging in sand or climbing the monkey bars at a local park. I also enjoy reading, knitting, and making arts and crafts with my kids.
