My Biography

Thank you for visiting my home page and learning more about the services we have to offer in the Department of Psychiatry. Currently, I am the Chief of the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center, and the Assistant Director for Outpatient and Regional Mental Health Services for Kaiser Permanente Northern California. As a clinician, I concentrate my practice in general psychiatry, addiction medicine, and the treatment of personality disorders through our Intensive Outpatient Program.

Additionally, I serve as Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the UCSF Medical School, where I teach a course in interviewing patients to first- and second-year medical students. I also supervise psychiatric residents in the practice and theory of psychotherapy.

In addition to my clinical, teaching and administrative responsibilities, I am active in my community. I serve as an officer on the Board for the Mental Health Association of San Francisco, and am active on hoarding and cluttering issues through that organization. I am also involved in the Physician Ambassador program through Kaiser Permanente and I present to corporate groups on stress management and other mental health wellness topics.

Above all, I enjoy working with and learning from each of my patients. My most important education has been from the individuals who have taught me about themselves and what it is like to suffer from mental illness. As a clinician, I believe that working alongside one another in times of both health and in crisis is the best way to achieve mental health.

In my free time, I enjoy travel, hiking, opera and playing classical piano. I am also a fiction writer and continue to work on completing my first novel.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
