About Me

Welcome to my home page where you can learn a bit about me prior to your visit.

I practice in the field of gastroenterology or "GI". This deals with all aspects of the digestive diseases and includes liver diseases as well. It is an exciting field which combines internal medicine skills with the latest technology. We spend a large part of our day performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as colonoscopy and upper endoscopy.

I am a relative newcomer to Kaiser, joining the group in 2003. I have worked for several years in private practice in gastroenterology in Sacramento and then in Santa Cruz. I am very excited about being part of Kaiser. We have an outstanding department with top notch GI clinicians that rivals or exceeds any practice that I have been affliated with. I am thankful to be out of private practice, and now focus on patient care without having to deal with insurance companies denying care, running a business, etc. The Kaiser model offers one of the best opportunities to provide excellent care most efficiently. My collegues are no longer thought of as my competition but as a great resource to share knowledge to provide the best of care.

I received my medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. I completed my internship and residency with the University of California Davis Medical Center. Additionally, I completed a fellowship at the Unviersity of California Davis Medical Center. I also have a masters degree in public health from UC Berkeley and worked in the field of occupational health prior to medical school.

I feel that patients should be active participants in their health care. One of my roles will be to help educate you to make informed choices. While we do have the latest technology and pharmaceuticals at our disposal often it is more important to take responsibility for your own health which includes maintaining a healthy body weight, obtaining regular exercise, quiting smoking, limiting alcohol, and reducing stress.

When not working my days are full with family activities. (My wife works down the hall in Oncology, Dr. Hersch). We have two active kids teaching me lessons of life. I enjoy playing golf and bike riding. I ride to work daily, rain or shine. Wave if you see me on the road (but don't honk!).

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
