About Me
Hello and welcome to my Home Page. I am delighted that you are visiting my site to get to know more about me and my practice philosophy at one of the best health care organization: Kaiser Permanente.
I was born in Vancouver, Canada to my Turkish immigrant parents. They returned back to Turkey in the sixties to raise their family with more traditional values surrounded with grandparents and loved ones. Growing up within my extended family was particularly rewarding and an invaluable experience for me, which is something I endeavor for my own family in this busy pace of life. Inspired by my grandfather and my brother, I decided to become a physician enthused with an ambition to help, heal and guide. If I had to choose again, I would not hesitate to choose to be a medical doctor.
After high school straight to medical school for six years I earned my medical degree at Istanbul University, Medical Faculty in 1987. My initial pediatric residency training in hardy medical circumstances in Istanbul for three years was a strong hold for me while building experience in the field of pediatric medicine. In 1991, I moved to Connecticut to start my US pediatric residency training at University of Connecticut Health Center.
During my pediatrics training, I became interested in medical genetics as the Human Genome Project was evolving and medical genetics was becoming influential not only in pediatrics but in many other disciplines of medicine. Impressed with the strong clinical values of the Medical Genetics fellowship training at University of Connecticut Health Center/Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, I started my journey in Medical Genetics in 1993. I joined the University of Connecticut Health Center, Division of Genetics faculty in 1999 as an Assistant Clinical Professor until my family moved to Northern California in 2002 for my husband’s business relocation.
October of 2002, I became a part of the Kaiser Permanente and The Permanente Medical Group family, which has been one of the best decisions of my life. I take immense pride being part of a great health organization committed to provide quality care and advanced medicine. After three years of a very rewarding practice as a pediatrician in Kaiser Permanente, East Bay area, I joined the Department of Genetics in Sacramento, Kaiser Permanente June 2005. This has been another best decision of my life. Kaiser Permanente Northern California Regional Genetics Services is the largest clinical genetics program in the country, if not the world. Please make sure you visit the website Genetics where you can find detailed information on the full range of genetic services we offer.
Not infrequently, I have been asked what a medical geneticist does. A medical geneticist is experienced in recognizing genetic conditions based on individual characteristics, family history, or through genetic/nongenetic testing and then providing the necessary counseling, treatment, and measures to prevent further complications. Although individual genetic conditions are relatively rare, collectively they are common and an inescapable part of medicine. Committed to continuing medical education, I am very happy to offer my compassion and medical skills to the members of Kaiser Permanente.

With all the advantages of information age in mind, I believe in the importance of utilizing the tools of information technology to become educated consumers of medicine. However, not all information is useful or accurate as each one of us, by now, might have encountered some unreliable sources on the Internet. Here are some helpful links, which I trust for their accuracy, as references for some of the conditions I see in my office:
