Introducing Dr. Jane Brooks:

I graduated from Vassar College with Honors and obtained my Ph. D. from the University of California, Berkeley. After doing teaching and research at U.C. Berkeley, I came to work as a clinical psychologist (License number PSY2733) in Kaiser Hayward's Department of Psychiatry in 1978. In addition to clinical duties, I have held an administrative position as the Chief Psychologist since 1992.

While I work with children of all ages, I specialize in working with young children and their parents, particularly children with developmental and attention problems. I have give workshops for parents of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) since 1979 and currently give parent classes in the Health Education Department and workshops for teachers on this topic.

In addition to my clinical work, I also write and am the author of two college textbooks on parenting -- Parenting published by Mayfield Publishing Company in its third edition in 2001, and The Process of Parenting, published in its sixth edition by McGraw-Hill in 2003.

As a therapist with children and families, I see my role much as that off a coach or consultant. I identify the child's strengths and the difficulties that get in the way of optimal functioning. I offer a variety of options for children and families to increase positive behaviors, and I make use of our extensive group program for children and parents. I also frequently recommend books or handouts for parents to read.

As children and parents change, I provide encouragement, support, and further refinements of strategies. As a child changes, other family members make changes to support the child's improvements. When parents are divorced, I like the participation of both parents. If there is too much anger between the parents to be seen together, I can see each parent separately.

I am in the office every day, but I am not here two mornings a week, Monday and Thursday, as I work in the evenings on those days, and on Tuesdays, I am not available as I do an extended group program.

Patients can contact me at (510) 675-4553. If I am with a patient or out of the office, you can leave a message, and I shall get back to you. If you need more immediate help between 9 and 5, press 0 and the # sign, and the receptionist will help you or connect you with the crisis worker. If you need immediate help in the evenings, call (510) 675-3080, and you will be routed to a person who can help you.

I look forward to working with you and your family to promote your child's development.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
