My Qualifications

I am a native of Southern California. I attended UC Davis for my undergraduate degree in Zoology. I then attended medical school in Wisconsin and graduated in 1981. While in medical school, I was on a Naval scholarship. I spent 6 years on active duty: 3 years for my residency, one year at the Marine Corps base in 29 Palms, and 2 years at Lemoore Naval Air Station. In 1987, I moved to Superior, Wisconsin where I practiced a traditional family practice for 10 years. At that time, I was a member of the Duluth Clinic. In 1997, I moved to Fountain Hills, Arizona and practiced for 5 years with a larger primary care group out of Scottsdale. That group failed financially, however. I chose to join Kaiser Permanente at that time because of its reputation for stability and leadership in medicine. I joined Kaiser Permanente in July 2002, and I have not been disappointed with my choice.

My Healthcare Practice

I am trained in Family Practice which covers the gamut from prenatal care to Geriatrics. For most of my career I did have a traditional Family Practice and enjoyed the variety that it allowed. While I do not provide Obstetrical and Pediatric care anymore, I still enjoy the variety that we see in the Adult Medicine clinic. I feel that my primary responsibility is to help patients understand their health status and be able to make informed choices about their health.

Receiving Your Healthcare from Kaiser Permanente

I have to say that my ability to function as a primary care physician has been easier with Kaiser Permanente than it was in my previous practices. Much of this has to do with the capability of the information technology that is available to the physicians in this group. Additionally, the ease of requesting specialty consultations when needed is better than what I had previously experienced.

My Outside Interests

My interests including running, gardening, hiking, and skiing. I do miss the frequent canoe trips that I enjoyed when living in the upper Midwest but have enjoyed the exploring that my family and I have done since moving to Northern California. I was also a Rotarian in Wisconsin and Arizona.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
