My Biography

A native of Worcester, Massachusetts, I took an unorthodox route to the practice of medicine.  While attending Dartmouth College, I completed the preparatory requirements for medical school, but I actually majored in French and Spanish Literature.  Following college, I lived and traveled abroad for two years before becoming a French and Spanish teacher at University High School in San Francisco (just a few blocks from where I now work).  After four years at UHS, I enrolled at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and graduated from medical school in 1998. I was then fortunate to do my Internal Medicine residency at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Francisco, and I have been a member of the Department of Hospital Medicine since 2002.

I find the practice of Internal Medicine in a hospital setting to be fulfilling and enriching because it allows me to focus on both medical and psycho-social details.  I believe that a person’s living situation, cultural background and personal beliefs strongly influence health and well-being. I am personally committed to helping patients understand and actively participate in their health care.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy long distance cycling, swimming, traveling and reading.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
