My Biography

I was drawn to Kaiser Permanente because San Francisco Medical Center was the flagship facility of the Kaiser Permanente health plan. I wanted to work with a tertiary facility in an urban environment, one with an excellent residency program. As for the city of San Francisco, I can tell you that I had checked out many places when choosing where to practice, and I think San Francisco really is the best place to live. It has terrific climate, loads of cultural activities—I consider it a privilege to be able to live here.

On the clinical side, Kaiser Permanente has the most rational approach to health care in the country. Incentives are balanced, and this organization supports the true meaning of preventive care. Our members realize what a great model Kaiser Permanente presents, and once they’ve experienced our health care system, they don’t need to be convinced.

For the last two years, I have served as Assistant Physician-in-Chief, which means I spend about half of my time on the administrative side of things. Because of this experience, I feel I can provide a good perspective to our leadership. My areas of special interest include cartilage injury in the knees, and all aspects of total joint replacement.

I try to exercise each day, and I get a small dose of the New York Times every day, too. I like spending time with my wife and two young children. I do love being a father! I am an avid bicyclist and I also enjoy running, skiing, and traveling. I have visited 40 countries and all 50 states.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
