My Biography

I joined Kaiser Permanente San Francisco because I wanted to be a part of a well-run group of cardiac surgeons. I have an engineering background, and I chose cardiac surgery as a career because I felt that it was a natural advancement of my engineering skills.

In my practice, I enjoy seeing patients getting better, going home and doing things that they used to do before heart failure. Each person that I see in my practice is different from the last. Each person comes with a different set of fears and needs. I have performed hundreds of cardiac surgical procedures, but every time I see a new patient, I start from scratch in trying to understand what is important to them and their recovery.

At Kaiser Permanente our goal is to keep patients healthy, but when patients are sick we have great resources that we can use to help them get healthy again. With cardiac surgery, many times patients get much better and often return to full function. Thoracic surgery is often the only chance to be cured of lung cancer; many patients are eligible for this option. I am particularly interested in valve reconstruction, minimally invasive MAZE procedures and arterial grafting.

Outside of my practice, I like to road bike, travel and try to stay off the sofa as much as possible. My wife is a dermatologist; we have twin boys. Some of our favorite family activities are playing ping pong and swimming.
